Internal Structure of an IPEX Connector
IPEX connectors follow the same basic design principles as other RF coaxial connectors. The interface uses a miniature coaxial structure that maintains controlled impedance between the antenna cable and the RF circuit on the printed circuit board. Center Contact
The center contact, also referred to as the signal pin, carries the RF signal between the cable and the PCB mounted connector. It is typically manufactured from copper alloy with gold plating to improve conductivity and reduce contact resistance. The signal pin is positioned precisely in the center of the connector to maintain the coaxial geometry required for high frequency transmission.
Outer Contact
Surrounding the signal pin is the outer contact, often described as the ground ring. This conductive ring connects to the ground layer of the PCB and forms the return path for the RF signal. Together with the center conductor it creates the coaxial transmission structure that helps maintain the characteristic impedance commonly used in RF systems.
Insulator
An insulating material separates the center contact from the outer conductor. This component maintains the correct spacing between the two conductors and preserves the electrical characteristics of the connector. Materials such as high performance thermoplastics are typically used to provide mechanical stability while maintaining good dielectric properties.
Snap Connection Mechanism
IPEX connectors use a snap connection interface that allows the cable plug to be pressed directly onto the PCB mounted receptacle. When the connector is aligned and pressed into position, the outer contact locks into the mating structure and forms a secure electrical connection. This design enables quick installation during device assembly and allows antenna cables to be disconnected when maintenance or testing is required.
